Secrets of Marylebone: Cadenhead’s Whisky Shop

We delve into a whisky lover's heaven in Marylebone.

Cadenhead’s Whisky Shop and Tasting Room may seem like a run of the mill whisky shop from the outside, but is actually a tardis of atmospheric rooms within. At the front section of the shop you’ll find the various whiskies they sell (as well as native gins and other spirits) including their own small batch whisky. Cadenhead’s is Scotland's oldest independent bottler, and is a hugely respected name on the whisky scene.

While their own produce takes pride of place, the shop also brings in limited editions which prove immensely popular. On the day we visited, bottles of the Longrow Red were in stock, which we were assured would be sold out by the end of the day. This batch of the whisky was matured in Pinot Noir casks (each year the blend is matured in a different red wine barrel), and their peated Scotch is also a big seller.

When you walk further into the back of the shop you’ll see a small, cosy space with plump leather seats and bottles of whisky ready for tasting. It’s a great reprieve from the bustle of London, but the real crowning glory is the tasting room downstairs. It’s an almost theatrical space, where tasting events are held regularly. At the tastings, guests learn how the whiskies are made, what makes them special and how best to taste them. Six whiskies are tasted, alongside canapés and occasionally handmade chocolates. Whiskies are paired with chocolates from Rococo Chocolates, an independent shop just around the corner.

Whisky Tasting Experiences cost £30 per person, and private tastings can be organised. See more on their website. http://www.whiskytastingroom.com

Cadenhead’s Whisky Shop and Tasting Room is on 26 Chiltern Street, London, and is around a five-minute walk from The Marylebone.
