Washington Neighbourhoods - U Street
The only district for jazz fans
Close sister to the Shaw neighbourhood, U Street is one of the hippest spots in town (particularly for jazz lovers). Celebrated jazz musician Duke Ellington was born here, and is one of the most beloved DC characters (there’s a huge sculpture of him by the Howard Theatre).
U Street is right on the cusp of Shaw, and has the same vibrant energy. There are plenty of great spots to listen to live jazz, with both local performers and international bands. It’s also a great area for foodies – this is where you’ll find Ben’s Chili Bowl, which is known all around the world (try the chili cheese fries or the infamous chili dog).
Things to Do...
Catch some live music
This is where you’ll find some top class music in the city – try the U Street Music Hall for a huge variety of gigs.
Visit Duke Ellington
Pay your respects to the city’s prodigal son at the statue of Duke Ellington.
Amble through the Farmers' Market
Nothing beats a stroll through the farmer’s market when you’re new to a city. This is on the corner of 14 and U Street, where you’ll find amazing produce every Saturday morning. The perfect place to pick up a picnic.
Unwind in Meridian Hill Park
The biggest park in the area, you’ll find everyone from the neighbourhood in the park on a sunny day. Inspired by an Italian garden, the park is a beautiful place to relax.
Vintage Shopping
If you’re a fan of vintage shopping, this is where you’ll hit the jackpot. There are plenty of vintage stores along U Street, so you’ll likely find what you’re looking for here.
Ethiopian Restaurants
This district used to have many Ethiopian restaurants, some of which have moved to other areas, but there are still some classic restaurants where you can find excellent Ethiopian cuisine.
9:30 Club
Another classic venue in the area, the 9.30 Club is always home to an excellent show.
Howard Theatre
There’s always something going on at Howard Theatre, whether it’s a big gig or a gospel brunch at the weekend.
Funk Parade
Every year, the Funk Parade is a huge celebration – part day fair, parade and music festival. This year, it was held on May 7th, 2016.
