When the city gets a bit too crowded, hop on a train to explore historic and iconic British locations

Whilst London has a wealth of activities, historical sights and cultural destinations to offer, sometimes it’s worth escaping from the big city to take a day exploring everything else the South of England has to offer. Rail and road links to smaller towns, countryside settings and seaside marinas make it easy to discover more of this green and pleasant land.

Brighton

Replete with pebble beaches, iconic striped deckchairs, buzzing street music and the sound of the sea, this coastal destination can be accessed via a direct train from Victoria. Amble down the Laines where you can browse independent shop windows or walk along the Palace Pier and find your inner-child when you spend all of your loose change on the slot machines. 

Oxford

This city, famous for its prestigious university and rich history, is definitely worth a visit. Pose for a photograph with the iconic Bodleian Library before cycling through the cobbled streets which take you to many of the university quads and gardens. Pick up gifts and treats from the Covered Market before heading up to a roof terrace to enjoy a cocktail or two.

Bicester 

A designer shopping outlet just 45 minutes by train from Marylebone, Bicester Village is less than an hour’s train ride from London’s Marylebone station. Shop until you drop at this renowned outlet hub which boasts over 160 luxury boutiques, all with reductions of up to 60% on the recommended retail price – if you’re a self-confessed fashionista, it’s not to be missed.

Margate

Head from Victoria train station straight to the seaside! This retro harbour town brags sandy bays, quaint Georgian and Victorian houses and a refreshing sea breeze. Take a stroll along the Harbour arm which offers views of the glorious ocean, before heading into Dreamland, an amusement park filled with small rollercoasters, shows and a big wheel – adrenaline will be high.

Winsdor

Known for its iconic Castle, visiting the bustling town of Windsor will not be a disappointment. After a short journey following the River Thames to the West of London, you’ll reach this market town surrounded by greenery. Most notably, Windsor Castle, which was built by William the Conqueror in the 11^thCentury, is now one of the royal family’s official residences. If you’re lucky, you’ll catch a glimpse of the Queen!
