As Christmas draws in and London hits its festive stride, there’s nothing quite like skating to get ready for the holidays

Whether you’re a skating novice or you’re used to pirouetting across the ice, we’ve put together our favourite places to cut a dash in the cold. So get your skates on…

1.    Natural History Museum

Walking distance from The Kensington, our knowledgeable neighbour, the Natural History Museum is a classic; the row of trees in fairy lights, the gorgeous backdrop of Alfred Waterhouse’s beautiful building and the majestic Christmas tree in the middle of the rink has earned it the moniker of the most charming ice rink of the capital. For those who don’t want to risk it on the ice, the usual festive fun is in attendance; Hotel Chocolat will be serving luxurious hot chocolates, there’s a traditional merry-go-round for the little ones and a viewing balcony open for all to admire the view.

2.    Somerset House

Head south from The Bloomsbury towards the river and you’ll come across the grand elegance of Somerset House and it’s ‘grown-up’ ice skating experience. Offerings from perhaps London’s most renowned pop-up ice rink include ‘Skate Lates’ with DJs providing the soundtrack to your time on the ice as well as a Fortnum and Mason Lodge where guests can enjoy winter dining, mulled wine and champagne.

3.    Canary Wharf

If you fancy travelling a little further afield for your skating experience, head over to Canary Wharf and enjoy one of the few covered rinks of the city, plus skating here at the weekend is much less crowded, so if you’re not one for the crowds it may well be worth the trip.

4.    Winter Wonderland

Long-time favourite for the families, Winter Wonderland has returned to London replete with its magical skating experience.  With the beautiful Victorian bandstand as its centre the rink is draped in garlands of beautiful twinkling fairy lights sure to get you in the festive spirit. As an added bonus, once you’ve had your fun on the ice, why not try out one of the many fairground rides, shop in the Christmas market or maybe even have a bite from the many festive food stalls. Yum.
