Dublin Zoo welcomes a new baby elephant
A cute new arrival
There’s not much in this world that’s cuter than a baby animal. Endless hours are lost around the world as people search for videos and pictures of adorable newborn creatures, but nothing compares to seeing one in person.
Luckily, Dublin Zoo has just welcomed a brand new member to its family. Last Saturday, a 90kg male Asian elephant calf joined the herd, born to his mother Anak and father Upali. This calf, who has yet to be named, is the second birth for Anak and the seventh born in Dublin Zoo in the last seven years.
Gerry Creighton, Operations Manager at Dublin Zoo was thrilled with the new arrival to the zoo.
“We are delighted to welcome our new arrival to Dublin Zoo and happy to report the calf is healthy, strong and was standing within minutes of his birth.
"It is fascinating to watch the younger females interact with the calf, as they are working together to protect him. Witnessing the sights and sounds of an elephant birth, is important to inexperienced females in the herd as it prepares them for motherhood.”
The newborn is a significant success for Dublin Zoo as part of the international breeding programme established to assist the survival of the Asian elephant. It is estimated that the Asian elephant population has declined by over 50% in the last 70 years. Dublin Zoo also provides ongoing support to the research of Asian elephants in the Kaziranga National Park, India.
If you want to visit the newest addition to the herd, you can find him in the Kaziranga Forest Trail at Dublin Zoo. The Croke Park is the perfect hotel from which to enjoy the zoo, which is just a fifteen minute drive away. The Dublin Zoo Family Package offers great value for families, and includes…
