Beat the back to school blues: fun things to do with kids this September
From interactive museum visits to adrenaline-filled adventures, here’s our guide to keeping the kids busy during the school term
Now that the school bells have rung to commence the start of a new, September can still be a month filled with many action-packed activities to keep the kids entertained. The sunshine may be on its way out and the weekly school runs may have resumed, but that doesn’t mean that there isn’t a host of exciting things to do in London on the weekends. Here’s our list of the must-do treats to elevate your weekends:
Matilda: The Musical
Staying with the academic theme, the much-loved Matilda by Roald Dahl The Musical is a great choice to keep the kids entertained. The story tails on from both the book and film, about a young gifted girl who endures a journey of lessons about herself and her unique talents. With elements of fun, naughtiness and singing, this is a show sure to get its viewers involved and promises a few giggles throughout. Matilda will be coming into its 9th year in the West End’s Cambridge Theatre, with tickets available from £20.
Natural History Museum: Experience an Earthquake
Get interactive with the kids, learning about earthquakes and volcanoes at the Natural History Museum. Filled with dramatic film footage, exhibits and interactive games, this is the perfect afternoon activity for some informative fun. Located in the museum’s ‘Red Zone’, it takes viewers on a journey through Earth and its sculptures to discover more about the forces which shape our planet - from examining fossils to learning about lava bombs and crystals. For a realistic experience, hop in the earthquake stimulator to encounter a live earthquake under your feet! This is one of London’s best free activities, so the only thing you need to worry about is getting the family to South Kensington.

Town House at The Kensington’s London Landmarks Afternoon Tea
Celebrate the best of London and treat the tots to a themed ‘London Landmarks Afternoon Tea’ at The Doyle Collection’s Town House in Kensington. Delve into a selection of scrumptious pastries in the form of Big Ben clock tower, as well as finger-sized sandwiches served on a London-eye inspired tea stand – all based around some of the city’s most iconic landmarks. Set in the sumptuous surroundings of the hotel’s elegant interiors, this is a perfect way to make any afternoon one to remember. Make sure you book online to ensure your dates are free.

Take a scenic route across London’s River Thames as you board onto the Emirates airline cable car. Easily accessed from Greenwich Tube Station, get ready to see London from a unique perspective including sights of the O2, Royal Docks alongside audio and visuals to compliment your journey across the city.
Cabins arrive every 30 seconds, with the actual flight itself taking approximately 10 minutes each way. Tickets can be purchased online and are priced differently for both adults and children. If you want to make this your evening’s entertainment, there is the added option of the ‘Night flight experience’ which runs after 19:00 each day.
With guaranteed great views and a moment to take in some of London’s splendour, this is the perfect day or evening experience to end a September afternoon.

Get the family down to Stratford for an adrenaline-inducing activity at the ArcelorMittal Orbit.
Notably the largest tunnel slide in the world and purposefully designed by German artist Carsten Höller, this promises a fun-packed adventure with 12 twists and turns at 178m long.
