Washington Neighbourhoods: Southwest Waterfront
Explore this waterside neighbourhood
We’ve been diving into the coolest districts in Washington in our latest series, from Georgetown to Dupont Circle. This week, we’re looking at two neighbouring areas - the Southwest Waterfront, one of the most historically important areas in the city (a fairly impressive feat in D.C.) and the Capitol Riverfront/ Navy Yard.
Southwest Waterfront
This is where you’ll find the open air fish market, which is the oldest in the country, as well as cool houseboats and epic views of the water and nearby memorials (peek over for a view of the Jefferson Memorial).
You’ll find a buzz of life along the waterfront, which is where nearby residents take to have a stroll on sunny days. During the summer, you’ll find many activities on offer, like outdoor movies, fitness classes and even yoga classes. It’s almost got a beach vibe, with a laidback atmosphere and chilled out feel.
It’s a popular residential area in the city, and it’s also where you’ll find a fascinating community of “liveaboards” – people who live on the boats throughout the year. You can have a peek at some of them in Gangplank Marina.
Things to do
Catch a show at the Mead Center for American Theater
As well as a killer view of the waterfront, this is where you’ll find great theatre productions. Keep an eye on the website for upcoming shows.
Sample the goods at the Maine Avenue Fish Market
It’s a vibrant place to visit in itself, but you can also have a taste of the best seafood in town at the market. You can sample crabs and oysters from Chesapeake Bay, or some sashimi that as fresh as you’re likely to find.
Stroll The Wharf
There’s a huge amount of waterfront walking to be done – take your time ambling around the basin for fantastic views.
Get Active at Hain's Point
There’s plenty you can do on the water, too – try paddle boating, SUPing or kayaking.
Take in the sights at The Gangplank Marina
This is where you’ll find the best views of the memorials, like the aforementioned Jefferson Memorial – there are plenty of sightseeing cruises available that will help you get the best photograph.
Capitol Riverfront/Navy Yard
Baseball fans will be kept happy here, at the home of the Major League Baseball’s Washington Nationals and the ballpark. And even if you’re not a baseball nut, there’s plenty to do along the water, weather you want to get out and active or just relax in one of the excellent restaurants. This area has changed a lot over recent years, from vibrant navy yard to bustling district.
Play Ball!
Whether you’re a baseball fan or not, catching a game at the Nationals Park is a fantastic way to spend an evening. There’s a great buzz before and after games, with a fabulous party atmosphere. There are countless food and drink options – it wouldn’t be a game without a hot dog, after all! You can also get some local grub – try the famous Ben’s Chili Bowl or some local crab. Oh, and don’t forget an ice-cold beer, too.
Yards Park
In the summer, there’s plenty of activity in the park, with outdoor concerts and the DC Jazz Festival.
Eat and drink
There is a real burgeoning restaurant scene in this neighbourhood, with a wide variety of places to satiate your appetite. Wander the riverside streets to find something that will tickle your fancy.
