The Secret Gardens of Dublin

Where to find greenery in the city

The Secret Gardens of Dublin

When there’s even a tiny hint of sunshine in Dublin, you want to get out and soak up every ray. Luckily, the city is filled with the most beautiful gardens – some of which you’ve heard of, and others that surprise even life long residents. So grab a picnic and make your way to some of these hidden spots in the city.

Iveagh Gardens

In the city centre, most people gravitate towards St Stephen’s Green. And rightly so – it’s a beautiful, historic park right in the middle of the action. But if it’s ever a little too crowded, walk just a few minutes around the corner to the Iveagh Gardens. There you’ll find beautifully manicured lawns, peaceful benches and even a waterfall.

St Patrick’s Cathedral

Even if you’re not going into the cathedral itself, the grounds of St Patrick’s are the perfect spot to catch a few rays. On sunny days, you’ll find many a Dubliner laying on the grass and relaxing, and it’s only a short walk from the city centre. If the weather turns, walk around the corner to the beautifully ornate Marsh’s Library, one of the best-kept secrets in the city.

Location: 15 minute walk from The Westbury.

Victorian People's Flower Gardens, Phoenix Park

The Phoenix Park is hardly a secret. But while most visitors choose to cycle around the greens, spot fallow deer or visit Dublin Zoo, the Victorian People’s Flower Gardens are a wonderful spot to spend a while. The garden dates back to 1864 and covers nine hectares (22 acres) in size, with a lake, children’s playground, picnic areas and beautiful flowerbeds.

Location: A 15 minute drive from The Croke Park.

National Botanic Gardens

Positioned right next to Glasnevin Cemetery (there’s even a gate that directly links the two), a trip to the Botanic Gardens is always a good idea, whether you’re familiar with them or not. Stroll around the green grass, or pop into one of the Victorian glasshouses where you’ll find beautiful tropical plants. There’s always something new in bloom, and something new to discover.

Location: A 30 minute walk from The Croke Park.
