Washington Neighbourhoods - Georgetown
Explore this cool district
In the latest of our series taking a closer look at the neighbourhoods in Washington D.C., we focus on Georgetown, the picture-perfect enclave in the heart of the city. This is where historic charm meets upscale chic, and we’ve got all the hotspots to put on your list when you’re in town.
Eat a famous cupcake
It’s fair to say that cupcakes have been the focus of a real boom over the last few years. And you may have seen the TLC show, DC Cupcake, showing the success of Georgetown Cupcake. It’s not hard to find the real life shop – there’s usually a queue forming all the way around the block.
Get active on the Potomac
When the sun shines, you want to get active. Head over to the Key Bridge Boathouse and you can canoe, kayak or SUP (check out our piece on activities in D.C.)
Climb “The Exorcist” Stairs
It’s always been one of the hottest sites for movie buffs to check out. The stairs that feature so prominently in The Exorcist are right in Georgetown, on the corner of 26th and Prospect Streets. Did you know that the steps were padded in order to shoot the scene? Students from nearby Georgetown University even gathered to watch (paying $5 a head)
Visit DC’s Oldest House
Washington’s oldest unchanged building can be found on M Street. It was built in 1765, and you can now visit the home and meander between the rooms. Best of all? It’s completely free.
Take in some live jazz at Blues Alley
D.C. is well known for its lively jazz scene, and Blues Alley is one of the finest in the city. Founded in 1965, the club has a real 20s feel, and has housed some of the all time greats of our time - Ella Fitzgerald, Dizzy Gillespie and Tony Bennett have all played.
Washington Harbour
In the summer heat, nothing beats having a meal on the waterfront, or playing in the sprinklers. Luckily, you can do both at the river in Georgetown – there are many great restaurants where you can dine al fresco.
Flash the plastic
There are some fabulous shops in Georgetown. With a mix of labels, high street boutiques and local stores, there’s no better place to pick up some new clothes for your night on the town.
