Washington Neighbourhoods: Shaw
Explore this vibrant and funky district
In our series Washington Neighbourhoods, we’ve been taking a look at the different districts of Washington D.C and what makes them interesting, unique and well worth a visit. Next up is Shaw, a vibrant and funky enclave with a strong sense of history and culture.
Shaw is one of the oldest neighbourhoods in D.C, and has been the location for businesses since the 19th century. Here, you’ll find great places to shop, fabulous concert halls and amazing places to eat (this is a real paradise for foodies).
There’s a strong musical scene in Shaw, part of which was known as “Black Broadway”, with stars like Cab Calloway and Pearl Bailey playing in theatres.
Things to do:
Head to the alleys
Back in the 19th and 20th centuries, there was a thriving alley culture in the district. Nowadays, the alleys are bustling with bars, and you’ll find any number of great places to grab a drink.
African-American Civil War Memorial
Shaw is an area with a vibrant African-American community and history. Pay tribute at this memorial, which honours African-American soldiers who fought in the Civil War. The names of 209,145 men are listed, and there’s a small museum with artifacts from the time.
Blagden Alley
Once a fairly working class area, Blagden Alley is now home to some cool restaurants and bars. Try The Dabney, with a working wood-fire, and JRINK Juicery for freshly pressed juice. If you want to walk back in time, the DC Alley Museum offers fabulous insight into the area, through the use of colourful murals painted on the walls.
Atlantic Plumbing Cinema
There’s nothing like a cool, boutique movie theatre, and this cinema is as stylish as they come. Sit back and watch a movie with a cocktail in hand, and you’ll never feel as chic.
Shop at GoodWood
If you want to hit the shops, then you will definitely want to head to GoodWood, one of the funkiest stores in the city. The stock changes frequently, but you’ll always find great vintage furniture and cool clothing.
