Bristol is a city renowned for its bridges, balloons and brilliant creative outlook. It’s also remarkably family friendly with some top notch attractions to keep everyone amused. But, slightly off the beaten track you’ll find some real gems which not only give you a feel for the city but offer a very special experience

Royal West of England Academy

The RWA is the only royal academy outside of London and as such has a remarkable role and history. It also has some brilliant exhibitions throughout the year including their Open Exhibition each autumn. Running until 24 January, Centre Stage takes visitors on a magical journey to explore the story of theatre in Bristol.

Behind the scenes theatre tours

Bristol has some very special theatres and you really shouldn’t miss catching a performance at The Bristol Hippodrome, Bristol Old Vic (celebrating 250 years in 2016), the Tobacco Factory, wardrobe Theatre or one of the many other pop up and outdoor shows that take place throughout the year. But for a true insight into the fascinating history of the historic Bristol Old Vic or Bristol Hippodrome, take advantage of one of the backstage tours. Available to the public (you can book in advance) you can transport yourself back through the ages to hear more about the origins of these fascinating places of entertainment with over 350 years of history between them.

Old Vic Theatre Bristol City

Gloucester Road

The street art tours will take in the Stokes Croft area and it is definitely work the walk further up the main road to Gloucester Road. This is a community bursting with independent traders where you will find artists, jewellery makers, cafes, bars and live music pouring out onto the streets.

St Georges
Tucked away off the main Park Street thoroughfare, lies St Georges – one of the most incredible concert halls in the country. The acoustics of this old church mean that the music transforms and fills the rooms with sound. It’s a great place to discover classical artists, opera as well as some more contemporary music and its quiet position next to Brandon Hill gives it an air of quiet and calm.

Slapstick Festival

While Bristol is known as a big summer festival city, one of the best festivals actually takes place in January. Slapstick Festival celebrates silent film, comedy and performance with its Gala event being one of the highlights in the city’s cultural calendar, featuring iconic silent movies set to live music. An array of screenings, talks and celebrations take place over the weekend featuring some of the best loved names in comedy.

Street Art Tours

Living in the city, you can often take the incredible street art for granted, making the city a full on outdoor gallery. Where the Wall offer tours led by the artists themselves which give you a real insight into the history of street art in the city, the artists and the stories. This one is an absolute must and you’ll explore places you would never find on your own.
