Even though there’s a chill in the air, there’s a certain charm to enjoying a drink al fresco in the winter months. In late afternoon, when dusk is falling and the city's lights are flickering to life, there’s nothing like cosying up with a warming cocktail while enjoying the outdoors. 

Balfes is Dublin’s chic Parisian-style brasserie in the heart of the Creative Quarter, and its cool terrace is just the place for an al fresco cocktail. With stylish monochrome stripes, cosy seating and an all-important heater, you can sit out on the terrace whatever the weather. There are beautiful woven blankets to pop over your knee if you want to feel even cosier, and a menu filled with warming delights that will put you in the festive mood.

There’s a whole section of the menu dedicated to Hot Toddies, with a number to choose from. You can keep things simple with a classic Hot Whiskey, garnished with a slice of orange studded with cloves and dusted with cinnamon. Or for something a little different, try a Hot Port – port is set to make a comeback next year, with exciting new brands becoming available.

An Irish Coffee is another classic, and one which is becoming increasingly popular in the bar scene (read our post about how to make the perfect Irish Coffee here). For something a little more decadent, the Baileys Cinnamon Coffee is the ultimate festive tipple. 

If you’d rather something a little less rich, then the French Coffee is the perfect choice. Or why not try a Calypso Coffee, with a hint of rum and chocolate?

If you’re looking for a bite to eat, there is food available all day, offering nibbles and bar bites as well as hearty meals. Fancy a light bite to go with your Hot Toddy? Try the beautiful bread and dips, or Bellota chorizo. There’s also a beautiful paté on toast points, or dressed crab on Guinness bread. Nothing beats oysters if you’re celebrating, and the Carlingford oysters with lemon and sauce mignonette are the best in town.
