Springtime in Washington, DC, is synonymous with the breathtaking bloom of the cherry blossoms, attracting visitors from around the world. While iconic spots like the Tidal Basin are renowned for their beauty, the city offers numerous other hidden gem locations to experience the trees in their full glory.
The cherry blossoms in Washington, DC, are more than just a beautiful spectacle; they symbolize a lasting friendship between the United States and Japan. The journey of these iconic trees to the nation's capital began in the late 19th century.
In 1885, Eliza Ruhamah Scidmore, after returning from Japan, proposed planting Japanese cherry trees along the Potomac River waterfront. Despite her persistent efforts over 24 years, her idea didn't gain immediate traction. Simultaneously, botanist David Fairchild imported 1,000 cherry trees from Japan in 1906, planting them on his property in Chevy Chase, Maryland.
The pivotal moment came in 1909 when Scidmore wrote to First Lady Helen Herron Taft, who responded enthusiastically. This led to Japan's generous gift of 3,020 cherry trees in 1912. On March 27, 1912, First Lady Taft and Viscountess Chinda, wife of the Japanese ambassador, planted the first two trees on the Tidal Basin's north bank—a gesture that blossomed into the National Cherry Blossom Festival celebrated today.
