The River Lee run the Cork Marathon
How the team got on
Last Monday, the streets of Cork were teeming with runners taking part in the annual marathon. The route both started and finished on St Patrick’s Street, taking in a huge amount of the city. Though, somewhat helpfully, the super steep hills north of the River Lee were left out – what makes for a nicely powerful stroll isn’t too pleasant in a mammoth run!
A few members of the hotel team ran the marathon themselves –Kate from the Reservations team, Paul from the Food & Beverage Department and Philip from the Front Desk all ran the full marathon. Ciara from the Front Office also ran the half marathon, and a big group participated in the relay.
We spoke to Philip Bunney and some of the other members of the team to find out how the day went.
How did you get on with the event?
Philip Bunney (Front Desk, Full Marathon): Overall it was tough but an enjoyable experience. It was tougher than I was expecting in some parts... I think knowing the route had its own advantages and disadvantages.
How did you feel beforehand?
Philip: I felt nervous but was also excited. I thought I was more prepared than I was and noticed that towards the end.
What was the highlight of the day for you?
Philip: The whole day was a great experience. The relay lads cheering me on as a passed them at the changeovers gave me a boost when it was needed, and seeing familiar faces throughout helped too! Passing the finish line running down Patrick Street was a highlight.
Paul Lane (Head Chef, relay): Having a few pints with the lads afterwards!
Kate O’Brien (Reservations, half marathon): My highlight was when I met my friend towards the end of the race and she ran along with me.
How did you feel afterwards?
Philip: I felt tired and relieved to have completed it. To celebrate, we all met in The Mardyke and had a few well-earned pints trading out stories about the day! Afterwards I had a feast of pizza and platters – I ate as much greasy food as I could manage!
