While visiting the fascinating Nano Nagle Place, be sure to make time for perusing the Irish-made wonders in their design shop. From candlesticks made from recycled copper to unique jewellery and hand-painted fine China, there is always cause to wonder at the ingenious ways us Irish folk can turn used to use in such a stylish way.

Samui

On your next stop in the city centre, one of my favourite independent stores, Samui, is just a stone's throw from The Crawford Art Gallery. Owner Clodagh Shorten's impeccable offering of forever clothing pieces and unique home accessories makes buying less-but-better effortless. Stocking the likes of Dries Van Noten’s iconic draping, Jerome Dreyfuss’ vibrant weekend tote bags and Malone Souliers’ effortlessly chic pumps, I challenge anyone to visit Samui and not be inspired by the beauty that adorns its walls.

Vibes and Scribes

Bookworms like me will adore Vibes & Scribes, Cork’s oldest independent bookstores. A riverside gem, teeming with great reads both new and pre-loved, stop by Lavitt’s Quay to browse their extensive range of Irish interest titles as well as art, photography, and design books. Their friendly staff are incredibly knowledgeable about the books they stock, and if you can’t find what you’re looking for, they will do their best to track it down for you – what service!

Plugd Records

In a world of instant digital streaming, opt for the slower music experience that vinyl offers, and enjoy a coffee while you’re at it at Plugd on Cornmarket Street. This uber cool cafe meets vinyl shop also hosts monthly events that celebrate some of Cork’s best analog DJs & musicians, making for a truly unique experience. Peruse the many records, pick one to play and enjoy a great cup of coffee at your leisure.

Cork Rooftop Farm

I always love to shop at refill stores, and Cork Rooftop Farm have taken this to another level! As the name suggests, owners Brian & Thay put their heads together during the pandemic, and set upon transforming a barren, grey city roof top into a green, fertile farm. They now sell their produce in the ground floor shop, amongst other refillable produce, plants, and even offer a vegetable box subscription service.  Be sure to stop off at their inspiring shop on your way back to The River Lee following a busy day shopping.
