Washington Neighbourhoods - Penn Quarter & Chinatown
Explore this vibrant part of the city
In our final post in the Washington Neighbourhood series, we’re taking a look at Penn Quarter and Chinatown. Home to some of the coolest spots in the city, this is also where you’ll find some of the best museums and galleries that Washington DC has to offer. You’ll be treated to some fantastic restaurants, too, and the area is buzzing both day and night.
Things to do
Watch an NBA game at the Verizon Center
A basketball game is a must for a visit to the states, and the Verizon Center is one of the best in the country. Catch a game with the Washington Wizards, or the Mystics (the women’s team) and you’ll enjoy a high-octane evening. There are also gigs held out of season.
Catch a show at Ford’s Theatre
This theater is where President Abraham Lincoln was shot, and still works as a working venue. The décor is beautiful, and the shows are mainly American themed (with great shows come Christmas time).
Visit the National Portrait Gallery
If you’re unfamiliar with America’s presidents, this is where you can see them all up close. This is the only complete collection of presidential portraits outside of the White House, and is a must-see in the city.
Visit the International Spy Museum
One of the most exciting museums in the country, let alone Washington, the International Spy Museum is a must-visit for fans of Bond (particularly teenagers). You can join in “missions”; learn how to crack codes and live life as a spy.
Go bowling at Lucky Strike
Is there an activity more all-American than bowling? The Lucky Strike Bowling Alley has 16 lanes, a full bar and a menu of classically American food.
Feast in Chinatown
This is where you’ll find the best Chinese food in the city – opt for crispy Peking duck or dim sum, and you’ll leave happy.
Explore the National Building Museum
This museum is focused on design, building and urban living. There are also activities for kids, film screenings and plenty of festivals held there.
Shop at CityCenterDC
This high-end shopping district is the best area to flash the plastic. High-end boutiques and the best high street brands sit side by side, with sleek walkways and restaurants dotted throughout.
How to get there:
Dupont Circle Metro Station (3 stops) -> Gallery Place Chinatown Station – 10mins
Uber or Cab 10 mins
