Frosty Winter Walks in London

Discover the city’s best open spaces and embark on frosty winter walks

There are plenty of open spaces in London to escape the indoors and enjoy the refreshing winter weather. As daunting as embracing the frosty air may seem, a cosy pub or café is never far away to warm up after an afternoon of fresh air. We’ve compiled a list of some of the best parks and outdoor trails to be explored in the city.

Little Venice

Head west of The Marylebone to Little Venice, which lies just above Paddington. Its name, taken from the Italy’s picturesque city, perfectly captures the meandering canals and waterways in this area of London. You’ll be able to stroll up and down the riverside before retreating to the warmth of the bustling cafés, delicious restaurants and cosy, quintessentially British pubs.

Hyde Park

A hop skip and a jump from The Kensington lies Hyde Park, the biggest Royal Park in London. A great option is you are looking to stay central, Hyde Park is divided by the Serpentine lake and boasts 142 hectares of grassland located right in the heart of London. Perhaps taking a morning stroll through the greenery is on the cards, before heading towards the buzz of Mayfair for shopping and a warming hot chocolate?

Kew Gardens

Sitting in West London is the stunning Kew Gardens, a renowned botanical garden that holds one of the largest botanical collections in the world. More than just a wintery walk, this location will keep you fully occupied as you work your way through ancient trees, discover rare plant species and warm up in the greenhouses. Covering 132 hectares, this World Heritage Site is a must-visit for a crisp winter’s day out.

Hampstead Heath

Nestled to the north of The Bloomsbury is Hampstead Heath, a great expanse of greenery spanning 320 hectares. The perfect location for a ramble, the Heath is located far enough out of the city centre to feel as if you’ve escaped to the great outdoors. Here, you’ll find plenty of hills to climb, enough to increase your heart rate to earn your Sunday lunch at a nearby pub. You will stumble upon ponds, ancient towering woodlands, playgrounds and even a lido (although perhaps a little too cold to be swimming in this icy winter weather).

Greenwich Park

Located in South East London, Greenwich Park offers breath-taking views of the city. This space is slightly smaller than the others, covering only 74 hectares, but what it lacks in size, it makes up for in looks! Boasting sprawling sights over the Thames and the towering skyscrapers of Canary Wharf and beyond. With plenty of hills, this park will ensure an afternoon of exercise. Head to the top of the hill and discover the Royal Observatory, Greenwich and The Pavilion Café for a hot cup of tea to warm those fingers up.
