Fashion Forward Afternoon Tea at The Kensington Hotel
In the elegant Town House restaurant, guests unwind with an array of classic treats; warm scones, sophisticated finger sandwiches and an array of sweet indulgences.
But now there’s a new Afternoon Tea on offer, inspired by the extraordinary designer Alexander McQueen. With the launch of the Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty exhibition at The Victoria and Albert Museum (see our review here), the team at The Kensington Hotel have created a particularly special menu in celebration of one of London’s most cherished residents.
The elements of the tea are inspired by some of McQueen’s most iconic designs. When the tiered tray is brought out, you can spot the homages to some of his best known pieces. There’s a moist Cherry Genoese, disguised as one of his studded clutch bags. The delicious Red Velvet and Rose Water Cake is presented in the style of Philip Treacy’s Butterfly Hat, and is dotted with specially made chocolate butterflies.
A delicious Buttermilk Pannacotta, inspired by a gown from A/W 2008, is topped with a silver dome and spiked with raspberry. Raspberry also features in the delicate macaroon, with a hit of red pepper.
And of course, it wouldn’t be an Afternoon Tea without the savoury selection. There is an array of sandwiches, filled with inventive concoctions like Dorset Crab and Artichoke Cocktail. There’s also a Fois Gras Cornet with tangy mango, and tiny Quail Eggs dusted with edible gold, paying homage to the Bird’s Nest Headdress from A/W 2006.
You’ll still find the classics, too, in the shape of buttermilk scones warm from the oven, with clotted cream and jam. As always, you have a wide selection of teas to choose from: try the Lapsang Souchong for a deeply smoky, unique taste. If you’re in the mood to celebrate, you can also order a chilled glass of Nyetimber sparkling wine, direct from their award winning vineyards in Sussex.
There’s no better way to celebrate the life and work of one of the world’s finest designers.
